Nuclear Fission
When a slow neutron enters a uranium nucleus, the nucleus begins to wobble back and forth like a water droplet. Soon after it begins to wobble so much that the nucleus begins to split. When the nucleus splits it breaks into a Barium and a Krypton atom. After the break it releases 2 to 3 fast neutrons which go and split other atoms.
The discovery of the ability to split an atom was revolutionary because not only was she was one of the first woman to make an enormous scientific discovery, but the discovery of the splitting of an atom completely rewrote so many different scientific theories.
When Lise came across the idea she was walking in the woods with her nephew when they decided to experiment. After which she went back to her lab and used Einstein's equation, E=mc2 (energy = mass x speed of light squared) to find out how to split the atom.
Thus when they realized the power of the energy released by the fast neutrons the scientists realized the potential to create a weapon of mass destruction using this invention. For more info click under the link below.
